original version

EP rapporteur/draftsperson Jan Philipp Albrecht is set to present his legislative report on the EU data protection regulation to the lead European Parliament's civil liberties and home affairs committee on Thursday, 10 January. Ahead of this, he will present the report at the press conference on 9 January.

The review of EU data protection rules was proposed by the EU Commission in January 2012 (http://ec.europa.eu/justice/newsroom/data-protection/news/120125_en.htm), with the European Parliament having co-decision powers. The data protection regulation is a key element of this review. The presentation of the report in the committee marks the first stage of the legislative process in the EP.

The legislative review aims to bring European data protection rules into the 21st Century and the digital age, dealing with online privacy and data storage issues, including safeguards and sanctions.
